Artist Peter Kirkiles (ESAS Member #168)

Peter is a well-established metal fabricator and artist with 30 years of experience in sculpture and architectural fabrication shops. The precision and skill with which he renders these “larger than life” objects are evident, as is – like Eric Sloane – his elevation to artistic status commonplace tools and objects of yesterday. The photograph below shows Peter’s Locust Rule (Black Locust, stainless steel, ink 84″ x 84″ x 48″), exhibited at the Eric Sloane Museum in 2012.

Peter has deep ties to Eric Sloane and to the museum. “My wife grew up in Kent School faculty housing directly across The Housatonic River from the museum. When we started dating in 1993, I visited the museum for the first time. In 2004 we moved to Kent from New York City. I would visit the museum frequently with my three young boys. I have regularly visited the museum over the past twenty years finding the museum a wonderful subject matter resource for my artwork.”

Peter recently completed a five-year project as Senior Conservation Technician for Monumenta of Hudon Valley, New York, and will now being creating personal artworks full time in his studio in South Kent, Connecticut. Artist Elvin H. Reed Jr. (ESAS Member #151)

My name is Elvin H. Reed Jr., member # 151 and attached is my attempt at Eric Sloane’s “Last Snow”. I’m inspired by his awesome art works. I’m 74 years old and just started painting when I turned 70. I have no prior training, am self-taught and never knew I could paint. I hope to get better with more practice and age! Thanks, Eric, for your awe-inspiring work !
Thank you, Elvin!
You are our inspiration! We’re honored to include your work in our gallery of art inspired by Eric Sloane.
Artist Winfield Cushing (ESAS Member #98)

Watercolor on paper entitled Full Moon, Autumn, by Winfield Cushing (Member #98). Taking up painting in his eighties, Winfield utilizes watercolors on paper that he makes. He is a self-taught painter, and he relied on Eric’s books on clouds and the weather to help him with his skies. “He was a magnificent artist”, Winfield relayed, “and so inspired me to become one, too. I love his clouds, landscapes – everything he did, really…Eric was incredibly gifted”. We feel the same about you, Winfield! We’re honored to include your work in our gallery of art inspired by Eric Sloane.
Artist Liz Tobin (ESAS Member #138)

Artist Liz Tobin began experimenting with “Dryer Lint Art” several years ago, after learning about the art from watching HGTV. “My first exhibit was Trash Art Show: Re Use, Re Cycle, Re Purpose’, held at the Eric Sloan Museum in 2013. This was my chance to be creative”. And creative she was, using a myriad of shades of dryer lint color to create a unique palette from which to create works of art. Liz returned for several years to exhibit her latest creations at the Eric Sloane Museum, including Last Light, her first challenge with different shades of gray (exhibited for The World Above: Celebrate the Sky), and one of her favorite works, Persistent Apple Tree. Liz added dimension by using sheep’s wool and horsehair to bring the artwork alive. The results are unique, one-of-a-kind, and fantastic! We think Eric would have approved!
